Abstract

Name: Sujan Devkota Age 22 Village name: Jyalla, a three hour drive from Gorkha, which gets completely cut off during the rainy season. The earthquake epicentre was just a few miles away and all non-concrete in the village were destroyed. Family: Sujan lives with his parents, Govinda and Januka, aged 49 and 42. He has two younger sisters. Job: He is a baker, but is planning to do a Batchelors degree in business studies.  quotes and images saved locally - (trip photos) Story: Sujan and his family set up a bakery in the village four and a half years ago using the power generated from the local micro-hydro electricity generator. They spotted a gap in the market when they realised local people didn’t know what bread was. They now make bread rolls and biscuits and people travel from nearby villages to buy them. It is a difficult living to make as the road conditions make transport difficult and costs high and the earthquake hit them hard as it destroyed the local micro hydro plant and left them without any electricity.
