Abstract
Mzuzu Coffee is the “keystone” of the Usingini project. The business will consistently use a large portion of the electricity produced. This will provide a constant long-term income to the project which make it possible and sustainable to supply electricity to ordinary homes and small businesses in the area. This partnership between the project and Mzuzu Coffee is one of the markers of Practical Action’s collaborative approach to micro-hydro work in Malawi. Mzuzu Coffee has a processing plant and head office in Mzuzu and has six coffee farms in the local area. The climate and the soil in this part of Malawi are perfect for growing coffee. 90-95% of the coffee is exported.
