Abstract
Selina Rono has been a landlady in Nakuru, Kenya since 1975 and has 18 households on her land. Selina has worked with Practical Action to help build a toilet and shower block for her tenants. She explained what it was like before they had the toilets and the difference it has made to their lives. Previously there was an iron sheet pit latrine, but it was already full up. “I had to move the latrines many times. Every 3 years it would be full." Moving the latrine was an expensive process, but Selina had to keep rebuilding the facilities to ensure that her tenants would not leave. Since the new toilets were built, she gets no complaints from her tenants. "We still need water" but "the sanitation system has improved". She commented: “they are very happy about the facility. It has become a model of the facilities that others are now adopting. Tenants are not moving now. I have a small water tank. We share this and my tenants get 40 litres 3 times a week.”
