Abstract
Nepal annual report 2012/13 This project contributes to sustainable improvements in the health and well-being of 6,000 households in urban and peri-urban slums of Western Nepal. Poor households in these locations suffer from indoor air pollution, unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation which is causing ill-health and death. Most households burn solid fuels using inefficient cooking stoves, drink untreated water and just 28% have latrines. By addressing these problems Nepal has the potential to make substantial gains towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. This project will directly improve the health and environmental conditions of 18,000 women and children by empowering them to improve their indoor air quality, water quality, and sanitation and hygiene practices. It will achieve this by working with communities to identify alternative technologies, such as smoke hoods and improved cooking stoves, and enabling them to finance these sustainably through savings/credit groups. Alongside this we will raise awareness of improved hygiene and sanitation practices, such as use of latrine, hand washing and safe water storage. The private sector will be encouraged to supply the necessary technologies (such as clean fuel, water purification devices) and trade with these communities. To ensure long-term sustainability we will advocate for policy changes, network and influence widely to ensure the successful results of this project are disseminated effectively, and ultimately benefit thousands more households in Nepal.
