Abstract
Sukmaya is 70 years old. She is the Mother of Ram Singh Bal and Lal Singh Bal. She lives with Ram and his wife Saraswoti Moktan and their family. Their small village is home to 18 families. Some of the families were badly affected by the earthquake, in the worst cases their homes were destroyed or it was too dangerous to live in their fragile homes. Access to the village is difficult as the terrain is mountainous. Sukmaya was asked about cooking on a traditional stove: “As long as I can remember, I learned to cook when I was 5.” “I’ve had asthma for 5 years now.” “I find it difficult to breathe. I have to rest when I go far.” “I have been cooking with firewood for so long.” “My eyes sometimes hurt.” “They would water [when cooking]” “I don’t worry about myself but thankfully my children don’t have to suffer like me.” “They got sick but I didn’t know if it was because of the smoke. Back then, children would die. Access to medical care was much worse.” “The old traditional stove got ash in the food and everything smelt of smoke. Not now.”
