Abstract

Lokiriama, Turkana, North/west Kenya. Shallow wells are usually used as back-up water supplies in times of water shortage rather than a day to day source.) It was in good condition and used the simplest technology to ensure it could be maintained – a windlass and bucket with a lid to close the well and prevent pollution entering when not in use. There was a good cattle trough for watering animals and everything was in good order and still working. Provision of safe, clean water via a shallow well to nomadic pastorlist community.
