The objective of this project is to reduce poverty and hunger and under nutrition amongst poor communities in Collana, Provincia de Aroma, La Paz. Funder: AECID y FUNDESO Beneficiaries are 3.900 inhabitants of Collana Case study So much to be done by Don Apolinar and others like him Don Apolinar Quispe Mamani lives in the canton Hichuraya in Collana municipality, province Aroma, department of La Paz Bolivia. Together with his wife Assunta, he has raised four children who are now 23, 22, 21 and 19 years old. Life for this man of nearly 70 years has been very hard. He told Practical Action, that people in his community derive their income solely from the sale of cattle, which, due to illness or climate change, lack of forage grasses for food, weaken and sometime die from lack of technical knowhow. This community lacks water, which has an impact on the health of people and animals. Climate change has affected agricultural production. Lack of rain and pests threaten crops. The rains were delayed until December, hindering the effective growth of quinoa. Potato pests such as worms and moths cause low output, leaving little for the sustenance of the family. These problems force people to sell their livestock, raising less than 200 dollars to meet essential needs such as vegetables, oil, noodles and rice. Apolinar says that their children no longer live with them because in his town there are no resources that can help them generate income to give their daily bread. Practical Action, through the project in Collana, Aroma - La Paz, is working with the population and others that in the municipality to help to reduce the food vulnerability of these families.
