Abstract
Name: Prem Bahadur Tamang Age 18 Village name: Kalika village Population: 900 households Family: Prem lives with his uncle and aunt because the village he is from is a two hour walk away. His mum(40) and dad (58) live in the village with his younger brother (16) and his sister (12). Job: Brickmaker and mason Interests: Prem likes listening to music – his favourite are traditional Nepali folk songs. He speaks limited Nepali, and normally converses in Tamang, the local language. We had to translate via his aunt, who is a Tamang. Prem is the main breadwinner in his family as his father is getting old and his mum suffers from ill health. He works for his uncle, who has benefitted from the project by getting a grant to buy a brick making machine. The bricks are made of a special mix of water, concrete, soil and sand. They are much less harmful to the environment than normal bricks because they don’t need firing and easier to lay when used for construction. Prem works to help keep his brother and sister in education and to help his parents eat. He wants to help them rebuild their home, but they have no excess money. He left school at 10. He gets 12 rupees commission per brick he makes and they make between 100 and 150 a day. However, when we visited, they were not making any because they had run out of materials.
