Abstract

Putul is a 17 year old widow from the Jessore Municipality in Bangladesh. She has a 3 year old son. Putul has received tailoring training - before she had no knowledge about tailoring but now she has learnt to make 3 piece Salwar Kameezs which she sells for 150 taka each. She sells blouses singularly for 50 taka each. Putul usually makes about 1500 taka every month. Before her training, Putul was a housewife and she relied on her husbands income. "I can spend my own money on my family, make my own decisions". She explained that before she had nothing, she had to stay with her son and had no money to do anything. "Now I can support my son."   The Integrated Urban Development project has provided training on tailoring, handifcraft, mechanics and mobile servicing to 1836 beneficiaries (like Putul) to earn an income with 28 sewing machines provided. An overall achievement has been giving a voice to this Dalit minority living in slum areas, who previously faced exclusion because of their caste from all political, social and economic activity. Women especially have been empowered to talk to people in authority and to request improvements in their living conditions and as a result have boosted their status, their environment and their incomes.
