Abstract

This project brief describes an initiative to reduce plastic pollution while creating decent employment in Faridpur and Satkhira, Bangladesh. The project converts single-use plastic waste into valuable products, including pyrolysis oil and black carbon, using circular economy approaches. Launched in 2021 and funded by Danida Market Development Partnerships (DMDP), the project works with municipalities, waste workers, and private sector partners to improve waste collection, processing, and market linkages. It has created new jobs and improved working conditions for existing waste workers, with strong participation by women. The project also supports community awareness on the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) approach and introduces innovative technologies such as floating litter traps to reduce river pollution. Despite operational and market challenges, the project demonstrates a scalable model for inclusive, low-carbon waste management and green job creation in secondary cities.
