Abstract
Narayan is 50 years old; he is retired from the army and lives with his wife and two daughters (one is at college in Kathmandu) in a small village. His house was destroyed during the earthquake but has recently rebuilt it and with it has installed a smoke hood. “I have cows and when we boil the milk, it doesn’t taste the same. This is one of the reasons that we got the stove and smoke hood.” “Food tastes better on firewood. We could no longer cut the trees [they are now protected] so we struggled to get wood.” “This house was built after the earthquake. Our house was old before and had a traditional stove. It was always smokey.” “When I retired I came back to my village.” “Our house was black because of the smoke.” “Smoke makes wood stronger, my family said that you must make it smokey to make it stronger.” “Smoke also takes away insects, such as termites which also keeps the wood stronger.” “My Father is 77, he has asthma. It may be due to the smoke.” “When we had the traditional stove, the smoke spread everywhere, it was dark and smokey. Now, the smoke goes straight up the hood and uses less wood.” “One of my daughter’s is studying engineering in Kathmandu.” It takes less time to make meals now “with our extra time, we work in the field and have a block factory.” With the extra time, they can earn more money to pay for their daughter’s education. “My wife works the farm and sells the produce.” “I still remember when I was in 6th and 7th standard we used to go to the forest. In 3-4 days we used to collect firewood for the entire year. The government stopped this 15 years ago and I had to make gas from cow dung.” “When I was in the army we used to cook on firewood. I kept changing ports. When I was there, I saw new cookstoves. I wanted to know about other options. When I was walking down the street I saw a sign for clean cook stoves for Nepal. I decided to find out more.” “I know what Practical Action are doing is good.”
