Abstract
Cajamarca energy projects: Luz para aprender (light to learn) Wilma lives with her two daughters, aged 13 and 3. Her husband works in the Yanacocho gold mine and only returns home about once a month. She keep 3 cows and earns an income by selling the milk. She is one of 44 households locally to have solar panels fitted. Before this she used candles for lighting, which cost 4 soles per packet and were often blown out by the wind. The solar system cost $900. Two technicians were trained for maintenance. Each household pays 13 soles per month for maintenance, some of which is saved for future replacement. Wilma can use her solar panel to charge her mobile phone.
