Abstract

DRR project that has set its goal on warning communities of impending disasters. January 28th 2010 saw a landslide which hit the town of Llamacancha. This was closely followed on February 6th by a second landslide that flooded the town, causing complete devastation to its residents. Houses, health centres and schools were lost as the river Cancaro swept threw the town bringing with it boulders and debris from the towering mountains above. An early warning system has been developed in the wake of the landslides to ensure the fast evacuation of people, should such a disaster strike again. Using telecommunications, video cameras and gyroscopes to measure and track the movement of the mountain, information is relayed back to a central point in the town which is continually monitored and the residents alerted should a situation endangering their lives arise. It is still trial and error, but demonstrated better preparedness for any disaster that may occur in the future, reducing their vulnerability.
