Abstract

The Real Beni community, of the municipality of Rurrenabaque, located on the banks of the Beni River, will soon have a cooling system to conserve their fish.   Fishing and tourism, are the main economic activities of this community. This refrigeration system will use the solar energy with alternating current to guarantee a better quality in the collection and conservation of the fish, and other activities like the elaboration of ice and conservation of fruit pulp of the place. The project is funded by the Christadelphian Foundation and implemented by Practical Action in coordination with Green Empowerment. Nowadays, the fish they collect is sold in the local Rurrenabaque market and at the Sunday fair, "sometimes the price is low" said Luis Ara Miqui, President of the Community Education Council, commenting that they accept this price, because they have to return home (up to 60 minutes in small boats  on the river), before sunset. Communal authorities, representatives of Tsimane Mosetén Regional Council(indigenous council); municipal authorities (Directorate of Local Economic Development of Rurrenabaque), responsible for SENASAG, Pilon Lajas rangers and Practical Action and Green Empowerment technicians met to socialize the project and involve the people attending the consensus and participation in its implementation. Caitlyn Peake, Green Empowerment Supervisor at the end of her visit said: "I see great motivation, we hope that the community will become a management model and that they can all work together."
