Abstract
The community of Jesus de Machacha in Bolivia rear alpacas - the male farmers make sure the animals are fed and watered whilst the women use the wool to create products to sell at market for an income. Practical Action has helped this community in multiple ways - installing a water pump for feeding the alpacas and building a protective shelter for the animals so that they do not perish in the harsh winter conditions. Practical Action has also provided the machinery and workshop in which the women craft their products and has helped the women gain access to bigger and better markets and gain a fair price. Frances is a local producer and craftsman who makes ornaments with hand-held tools. He demonstrated the water pump which Practical Action installed.
