Abstract

Objectives: The project was designed to improve the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impact of local hazards. By working with communities, through local partner NGOs, locally-based disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies which focus on diversified and strengthened livelihood strategies have been developed. The increases in resilience provide the basis for advocacy strategies to influence policy makers nationally and internationally to adopt a livelihoods-centred approach to DRR, as opposed to the more commonly adopted post-disaster emergency response. The project has two main components; community level activities which reduce the impact of particular hazards by increasing livelihood opportunities, reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience and preparedness; and linking these community-based experiences with local, district and national institutions through advocacy and capacity building in order to influence policy. The project targets several of the Priorities for Action identified in the Hyogo Framework. In Nepal the project focuses on improving the livelihoods of the most vulnerable communities who are living along the rivers through food security and income generation activities to increase their resilience. To enable the communities cope with drought during the dry season, the project is also supporting for irrigation schemes. Along with livelihood improvement activities, the project is also implementing such activities as plantation and river training along the river banks that help mitigate the adverse impacts of the floods.
