Abstract

From Bangladesh annual report 2013/4 An off-farm income earning option brought fame to 40 women of Konabari village, Sirajganj. Based on existing opportunity and their own choice, these women wanted training on weaving and input support as there was a positive market environment. The V2R Project addressed their demands after testing feasibility of this option. They were introduced to a local wholesaler (called mahajan) regarding confirmed marketing of their products. The women started with weaving, producing napkins (gamsa) with much interest. Now they are well-experienced and are established in their profession. They make one napkin in one hour and get BDT15 as wage for each. Each of them earns BDT3,000/month (US$1 = BDT75) on average after maintaining their homestead-works. It is completely additional income to the family. The total average income of these families was less than BDT2,000 in 2009. Only two years ago, the women of Konabari were helpless and wholly dependent on their husbands’ income. But now the situation has completely changed through weaving.
