Abstract
Sustainable Energy for Rural Communities (SE4RC) Horace Chimwaza is a Health Surveillance Assistant at Kampata Health Post in Malawi. The Health Post currently has no electricity or access to water. Horace explained the difficulties his Health Post faces: "when we have patients suffering from cholera or diarrhoea, we fail to assist them because we do not have lighting. For pregnant women, we fail to assist them because we do not have water at this Health Post. There is a source of water 2km away which is very far." "At this Health Post we have a watchman. When thieves come at the post because we do not have light, they fail to execute their duties. They fail to apprehend the thieves." "We have a lot of cholera cases which come to this Health Post. Since Cholera patients need to be given IV, this is difficult to do if we have no light, especially at night. We use other sources of light which do not help matters, such as candles, kerosene lamps. If we do not have these items, we ask the patients to go and buy the cancles but since they are sick, they cannot afford to do so." Practical Action's Sustainable Energy 4 Rural Communities (SE4RC) project will provide access to modern energy services for people in poor and remote locations in Malawi.
