Alternative Title
Darfur Community Peace and Stability
Abstract
The project aims to reduce the vulnerability of communities to conflict between different tribal groups and communities, as well as between farmers and pastoralists. It is being implemented in partnership with community based organisations and the government institutions (such as the Ministry of Agriculture). It is a large scale project, building on the hugely successful Greening Darfur programme, which is working with 33 communities to identify the solutions they feel will help improve productivity, alleviate poverty and build peace in the region. The project uses a participatory approach developed by Practical Action known as Participatory Action Plan Development (PAPD). This means essentially sitting down with a variety of stakeholder groups 22 from the communities and asking them to nominate the development priority for their village. It could be a borehole for water access or it might be an earth embankment to stop rainwater flowing from the productive soil to the desert soil. Other technology solutions include haffirs, dams, water pumps, donkey carts and community forests. This project also includes the innovative demarcation work which uses concrete posts to demarcate safe migratory routes for pastoralists to move their animals.
