Abstract
Jane Nyaingori is the Chair of the Waste Management Club (cleanliness club) in Ward 7, Bindura Town, Zimbabwe. She has benefitted from Practical Action's project WASHE in Small Towns. Jane explained: "We started the Club in 2013 after notice a bad situation in the ward. There was waste everywhere and our children had diarrhea. So we started a programme to clear our ward and get an income. We have made toilet cleaner our of xxx acid and dye. Some of the products that we have made from waste material such as old sacks and wool. We’ve made seating mats and some bags made using drinks containers. We also make floor polish from plastic, paraffin and red oxide." "We learnt these skills by members of the club attending courses such as waste management training from Practical Action. We don’t have a proper outlet for our products at the moment, we sell to people when they ask." "Our club vision is to increase production, but we need materials to make them and we need funding and support to do this. We are also in the process of looking for markets to sell these items within Bindura town and also more widely." We also met Kladi Maela, a disabled man in a wheelchair. He told us "Being in a wheel chair used by hand, imagine what it is like to wheel your way through human waste from the broken sewers. As someone who is disabled it is important to inform members of the challenges I face, and I come to the club and interact with people. I was able to advise members on the impact of broken sewers.”
