Abstract
Rashida lives in Faridpur, Bangladesh. She is married and has 3 daughters and 2 sons. Rashida has benefited from training in tailoring and has now become a trainer, she has trained 32 other members of her community with the vital skills they need to start their own tailoring business. She is the secretary of her local association which serves 250 households. Rashida explained “at the beginning I had nothing. From Practical Action I had training and a small loan. I was able to start my business with the skills I learnt. I then took out another small loan to purchase my own sewing machine. I have now trained 32 others and received money for this. make 5000-6000 taka per month for selling clothes and also providing training.” People buy their own cloth and Rashida makes them into clothes. She makes tops, dresses, shirts and just about anything else! This training means so much to her, Rashida told us: “before training, I was a housewife. I would do some tailoring, but not a lot. Now with the income, I save it for the future. I want to establish this as a proper business. I can now send my children to school and invest in the future. I plan to buy a refrigerator.” Rashida is currently classed as ‘low income’ person but she hopes to become a ‘middle income’ person. http://practicalaction.org/blog/news/campaigns/this-slum-was-nothing-like-i-expected/
