Abstract

Anthony Ndugu is the Chair of a pit emptying group that has been supported by Practical Action. Anthony and his group received a gulper so that they no longer have to manually empty the latrines. They were also given protective clothing. At the beginning of the project, Anthony was shy and felt ashamed by the job he did. He didn’t feel respected by his community and would often come home covered in waste. He was too ashamed to tell his son what his job was. Now, he is proud of his job and is finally being recognised for how important it is. He spoke in English, which he didn’t do before. "Compared to 3-4 years ago, I can see through the group members that things have changed. They can now save, they have changed a lot, they are educated. The family are so happy, they are fed and my children can get an education."
