Abstract

This fact sheet highlights the growing crisis of plastic waste in Bangladesh and calls for urgent action. It explains how rapid growth in plastic production, increased use of single-use plastics, and weak waste management systems have led to severe environmental, health, and economic impacts. Urban areas such as Dhaka and Chattogram are particularly affected, with rivers carrying large amounts of plastic waste to coastal and marine environments. The document emphasises the critical role of the informal sector in plastic waste collection and recycling, while also outlining gaps in policy enforcement, public awareness, and infrastructure. It presents key drivers of plastic pollution, reviews existing national policies, and proposes practical solutions including improved recycling systems, business engagement, innovation, and behaviour change to reduce plastic pollution and protect people and ecosystems.
