Abstract

Jack Owino is the Headteacher of Eileen Ngochoch Primary School in Nukuru, Kenya. Jack has worked at the school since 2012. The school benefitted from improved water and sanitation from the Umande Trust, facilitated by Practical Action. New toilet blocks were built and water tanks and hygiene training were provided. Before, Jack said that there was "a lot of open defecation [by students] but not now". Due to improved personal hygience and hygiene standards, the students are encouraged to stay in school. Home life is difficult with the students coming from the surrounding slum and having limited or no access to water and sanitation. Before the new water and sanitation facilities were built, girls would not come to school when they were on their periods. But now there is no longer any reason for them to stay at home. Girls also now have access to sanitary products whilst at school. Performance has doubled since the toilets were built and sickness has reduced.
