Abstract

Eva Nyamogo is a Community Mobiliser who works with her local community to improve their access to water and sanitation in Kitale, Kenya. Three years ago, Eva received training from Practical Action on good hygiene practices, solid waste management and administration and management skills. This training has changed her life as she has the power and skills to work with her community to change their lives forever.  Eva's community used to have no access to safe and clean drinking water. She said that people would have to walk 4 miles, every day; just to collect water from the stream, which was unclean and unsafe. People were often unwell and she explained that “they thought it was normal to be sick.”  The community now have access to a water kiosk. The kiosk was primarily for mechanics, as Eva explains "when you work in a garage, there is a lot of mess" and the workers wanted a water and sanitation facility. However the kiosk is also used by local households who used to use a stream 2 miles away. The kiosk is open from 6am to 8pm daily and provides clean water, showers, toilets, laundry service and phone charging for a small fee. Eva now trains local people in the importance of good hygiene practices and solid waste management. “I feel good for myself. I can change the thinking in my community... When you change people’s lives, you feel happy.” Eva also commented: “it’s not all about poverty, it’s also about mindset... I want women’s work to be easier. I want them to get a better education by reducing the time they take to collect water.” Project: People's Plans into Practice
