Abstract

The aim of the project is to increase the incomes and reduce the marginalisation of 24 village communities (15,000 socially excluded, disadvantaged low-caste poor people) including child and women headed households, Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and those affected by conflict. This will be achieved by: • Improving transport services, such as installation of gravity ropeways and tuins, to enhance people’s mobility and access to essential services such health, education and water and to increase interaction with external communities and markets. • Increasing and diversifying income generation activities through improved production, processing and marketing of farm products. • Strengthening the capacity of locally community based institutions to select, manage, operate and lobby for pro-poor transport services The installed gravity ropeways/tuins will be managed by local user committees, with user fees collected, which will pay for the operators wages, monthly maintenance costs and also provide a profit for investment. The diversifying of income generation activities and improvement of production techniques will increase income, enabling the beneficiaries to improve their standards of living and meet the cost of health and education services, as well as invest in building their businesses. Community ownership and management of transport services are essential in ensuring that these systems are properly maintained and valued long-term, and the sustainability will assured by building the capacity of community user committees to plan, manage, operate and maintain the systems. Project outputs: • Improved community access to markets through improved transport services. • The efficiency of community based economic activities will be increased, with improved access to markets resulting in increased household incomes and people having better access to services such as education, health, water and will enjoy improved standards of living. • People will be able to more effectively communicate their needs and lobby for pro-poor transport services and policies.
