Abstract
Practical Action in collaboration with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) trained smallholder farmers of two villages in Sudan to manage mesquite trees and produce charcoal from mesquite. Using a simple, low cost technology Ohaj Abofatim Hamed can produce two sacks of charcoal a day. This has increased Abofatim’s income by 60% and also limited the spread of mesquite trees to agricultural land. “With the increased income, I bought five sheep for milk after covering my daily needs,” Abofatim says. “Now my children are free to study since they no longer need to help me collect fuelwood.”
