Abstract

IA35000362NEP SWASHTHA II Strengthening Water, Air, Sanitation and Hygiene Treasuring Health: Healthy Homes in Rural Terai and Mid Hills in Nepal Objectives o Understand household energy needs of the rural population focusing on rural terai and rural mid-hills. In particular, to better understand cooking habits and preferences o Collect information about source and availability of household energy & water o Health cost calculation looking at current state of water quality, sanitation and indoor air quality o Assess the difficulties of rural people with the traditional cooking stove and their interest in changing to new/improved one o Review of successful stove and improved ventilation programmes, HH water treatment practices and technologies adopted globally o Test best suitable technological options for improving indoor air quality Expected outputs: By the end of the program development phase, there will an integrated ‘Health Home’ programme proposal based on the knowledge, ideas, tools and learning from the action research undertaken during this program development phase. These proposals will effectively seek to provide Practical Action with further resources to initiate or replicate the interventions. Specific outputs o Identified suitable technology for indoor air quality improvement and fuel saving for Rural Terai (plains) in Nawalparasi district and rural mid hills areas in Tanahun district o Identified HH water treatment issues and suitable/appropriate technology for addressing them o Key infrastructures needs will be identified to establish sustainable markets for fuel efficient stoves and water treatment technology o Developed detailed strategy, approach and priorities of healthy home programmes o Identification of relevant policy issues and the areas for Practical Action to work on policy advocacy and influencing o Documentation of key lessons, processes, technology brief and other relevant information generated Long term impact: By the end of 2012, Healthy Home Programme should improve the health of 35,000 rural/urban poor women and children by increasing their access to improved indoor air quality, HH sanitation, safe drinking water and clean energy. Target Beneficiaries: Nawalparasi and Tanahu districts: Nawalparasi represents low plain land (Terai) and Tanahu is mid-hills. Previous experience shows that Healthy Homes will not make a significant impact at scale unless all of the villagers change their practices and can access the technologies. We will identify key issues and design follow up programme accordingly.
