Abstract
Salbal village, Blue Nile Project life: February 2007 - May 2010 The overall objective is to contribute towards sustaining the re-settlement of war returnees and to facilitate their re-integration into the community in the Blue Nile State. This will be achieved by: Improving institutional and organizational developmental capacities Improving food availability by increasing crop and animal production Facilitating access to reliable and high value markets for agricultural, forest and animal products Facilitating access to water and sanitation and rural energy The beneficiaries of this project are around 25,000 people living in 10 villages in the Bau area. The livelihoods of these people are dependent on subsistence agriculture and animal herding. Many poor people living in neighboring communities will be able to benefit from the project by replicating the successful interventions. Activities include increasing crop production and productivity by: Providing agricultural extension services Providing blacksmith training to make much-needed agricultural tools Providing better farming options Providing relevant appropriate agricultural tools Providing certified seeds of improved varieties Improving harvesting and storage Enhancing the local capacity for development of the targeted population, civil society and the public sector As part of the project 25 people were trained in data collection and analysis so that socio-economic data could be collected for future work by NGOs and humanitarian and development agencies.
