Abstract

Sanitation workers are vital for keeping Bangladeshi cities clean and healthy, yet they often face dangerous working conditions, low pay, social exclusion, and limited support. Practical Action, with the Gates Foundation, runs a project to improve their lives and work through a cooperative model that can be scaled nationally. Building on successes in Faridpur and ten other cities, the project helps workers form registered cooperatives, strengthen business and technical skills, and provide safer, more inclusive sanitation services. It also offers affordable technology, access to finance, and social protections, including insurance, to reduce risks and improve economic security. By working with local and national authorities, the project aims to reach 400,000 sanitation workers, enhancing urban sanitation, raising service quality, and creating dignified, sustainable livelihoods for one of Bangladesh’s most marginalised groups.
