Alternative Title

Catalysing modern energy services in Southern Africa IA35000113ZIM

Abstract

Chipendeke The overall long term objective of the action is to improve access to modern energy services and increase uptake of renewable energy technologies in the energy mix in poor rural area of Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Energy touches upon virtually every aspect of the society. Access to electricity in rural areas in all the three countries remains low (0.05% for Malawi, 0.7% for Mozambique and 19% for Zimbabwe) severely curtailing essential value addition activities for subsistence and economic growth such as agro processing and light engineering. Access to modern energy services still remains a major obstacle to the delivery of other basic socio-economic services such as education and health (prioritised in all the poverty reduction strategies for the three countries). Hope for connection to electricity is further dampened by the regional power shortage forecast by 2007 that will see the Southern African Power Pool generating capacity being insufficient to meet the regional demand. Thus priority for rural connection is ranked very low. • 45,000 men, women and children in rural communities of Mulanje district Malawi, Manica District Mozambique and Nyanga District of Zimbabwe. • 10 Private Energy Enterprises • Rural artisans and blacksmiths • Manufacturers and equipment vendors • MMCT and KSM – local partners 15 community based organisations (CBOs)
