Abstract

Halima Aldouma In the past we had to bring water from neighbouring villages where there was water, from Shegra about 10-12 kms away. It took me a whole day to go and collect water. When I had to collect water from Shegra I would leave my village at 7 am and only get back at 5 pm – I would carry 4 gerry cans. I had to do this every other day. There are 7 people in my household. In the past we used to be very, very careful with water and only ever use in very small amounts, little amounts for cooking and drinking. It was a big problem. Now it takes me 1 hour to collect water, half an hour to go and half an hour to come back. Now I can rest sometimes. In the past I had to bring water and then start my domestic work to cook for my family and such like. Now I have more time and I can also work on my field. We can grow more crops. Before I grew millet and sorghum and now I can grow water melon, sweet melon, chick peas, pumpkin, etc. On my farm I am growing lots of vegetable. We have a better diet. I have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. My boy is in secondary school and one of my daughters is in primary. The others will go when they are old enough. This year we are expecting a very good harvest, the crops are here, they are growing. This is good.
