Abstract

5. Marginal Farmer, Rajbari Mrs Jahanara Begum Member of agricultural group Notun Char, Baliakandi, Rajbari Background: Mrs Begum and her husband have three children who are all students. They own 1.1 acres of land and grow onion, garlic, jute, bringal and rice (mainly boro). They employ 1-2 labourers when required. She also has a goat. Mrs Begum works mainly in and around the house. They have just bought a sewing machine for her son to use for tailoring. Involvement in project: Officially her husband is the member of the agricultural producers’ group, but she often attends. She has received good information from the project on vegetable production, and is now waiting to receive boro rice seed. Benefits: Mrs Begum is pleased with the training she has received so far but it is too early to see result with crops such as rice. She is confident that she will be able to increase her production. Future plans: Mrs Begum would like to invest in more land to increase production further.
