Alternative Title

Making Markets Work for Small-holder Dairy Farmers in Bangladesh IA25000055BAN

Abstract

The programme puts Participatory Market System Development (PMSD) theory into practice by organising and establishing collaborations among dairy farmers, local collectors, privet service providers, sweet shops/restaurant and influencing local livestock department staff to become more supportive to the farmers and service providers. By using the service of collectors and para-vets farmers are able increase their income by at least by 130 percent as result of better quality and better linkage with the market system. The para-vet service providers are serving at least 5000 farmers per month. The processors are happy because of quality milk supplied by the farmers and collectors. The project has been promoting relationships among the market actors and other stakeholders. Initial results show that the project has empowered dairy farmers to engage in the local milk markets system. It has promoted interaction for transformation of many existing practices of farmers, collectors, processors, para-vets, etc. to become more effective. And, the project team has already shared the experience with a wide range of institutions (e.g. PKSF, UNDP) and market development practitioners. 1. The project will build capacity of the already supported farmers, collectors, para-vet, processors, and other service providers further to increase ultimate beneficiaries from 6400 to at least 12000. 2. It will support 40 producers groups, 1 para-vet association, and least 10 stakeholders/interest groups’ institutions for having effective organisational structure for establishing collaborations and achieving sustainability. 3. During the proposed phase, the project team will develop communication materials for scaling up dairy work.
