Abstract
In the Andean province of Canchis, the main activity is raising alpacas, llamas and sheep and growing native potatoes. On average, each family owns 50 alpacas or llamas, obtaining an income of about $300 a year. Their homes are single room huts built of stones and mud with a straw roof. The main source of energy is dung, which is used for both cooking and heating. There is an alarming rate of chronic infant malnutrition, caused mainly by parasites and acute diarrhoea. More than 200,000 Andean highland families live in a similar situation in Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, Apurimac and Huancavelica in the south of Peru and in the highland plains of Bolivia, where the widespread nature of homes, low population density and the large distances from the towns make it difficult for the public and private sectors to become involved. This project aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation and sustainable living in vulnerable rural communities that are dependent on natural resources and live in ecologically sensitive areas in Peru by promoting development alternatives and basic services compatible with natural resources conservation and regeneration with technical assistance and projects in the environmental sector. • Management of water resources, promoting technologies for water supply and treatment of sewage and waste management. • Sustainable and decentralized services access, use and management of clean energy from local renewable sources. • Develop local abilities providing services access and suitable natural resources management • Impact and influence in governmental and nongovernmental representatives associated with services, natural resource management, environment, gender, health and local governance.
