Abstract
Abudegais Dam and Hafir, Darfur. The hafir water is filterd through sand and a pipe which fills a well where people collect the water. There are also separate water troughs for animals. The rehabilitation was in 2004. We dug out 2m so as to reach a depth of 3m. We also built the input and output connection. The rain fell in September but in February there is still water in the ground and things are still growing. This is the first year of operation. The main crops are watermelon, sorghum, peas, okra, etc. It cost £55k UK to build the dam. This year we have irrigated 1,000 feddon (500 acres). If people were to rent out this land the cost per feddon would be £400 Sudanese. This means that in terms – only of land rent – it would bring in £400k Sudanese which would more than pay for the cost in the first year. The land is owned by the community, 634 households each received 1 feddon. The other land was rented and the money invested by the community in ploughing the whole area, what was then left over was kept for the community.
