Abstract

25 in Producers’ Group (all women) Notun Char, Baliakandi, Rajbari Meeting: All the members selected for this group had knowledge of looking after cattle, even if these belonged to other family members rather than themselves. Most did own cattle, but 9 members did not have their own cattle and were given either a cow or bull by the project. Those given cattle had to pay 5,000 TK towards the cost whilst the project contributed 18,000 TK. After 4 months the expected sale price for the animals was 35-40,000 TK. As the women wanted to work close to their house, cattle-rearing was seen as a convenient occupation for them. The group had been taught a range of technologies including making up feed (mixing molasses, straw, water), disease control and vaccinations. They had found the training very useful, and said that there was no problem in giving cattle to a few members of the group as the others still benefited from the training. They said that people outside the group would also be interested in joining. Before this training, the women relied on obtaining information from paravets.
