Abstract
Aziza Mohammed Abdallah is a farmer in Zum Zum village, North Darfur. She has a 5 hectare farm where she grows okra, watermelon, tomato and cucumber. She sells her produce at El Fasher market. “Before the dam, there was not much water; it did not reach very far. Many people had started their own water harvesting techniques and this is how we used to get water. After Practical Action came and studied the area, they constructed the dam.” She exclaimed “water now reached everybody! It now reached areas that haven’t had water for 20 years. I feel like the ground has been rehabilitated. Everywhere you look, there is green.” “There’s no more conflict because everyone now has water. Now farms are producing a lot of vegetables, they can access the market and earn an income. Now we have money for celebrations, villages even have money for improvements to their homes.” “We now have more money so we can save some for the next year, for more cultivation! I thank God. Now I am just dreaming for more. I now feel secure. I don’t want to think just about myself, I want to improve my village.” “My income has improved. My son wants to be an electrical engineer; he can now go to university. I have already paid his fees. Another one of my children will go to university next year.”
