Abstract
William Mukonje, age 40 is the chairman of the co-operative of Himalaya. He has 6 children. “This project will create employment for young people in our community. We will be able sell planks from the sawmill to raise money for the community. It is difficult to unite people to go in the same direction but we are motivated to finish the task. We are very proud of the work we have done.” There is a rich source of wood for poles and planks in the area, owned by the co-operative. Eucalyptus is the most common and grows quickly in this climate – the trees can be cut 4 times before replanting is necessary. There are also some pine trees suitable. The community have planted apple and plum trees as these will be a viable crop when they have refrigeration available. The community were digging stones to use in the foundations of the sawmill.
